Sony Headphones (Sony MDR-V6 & Sony MDR-7506)

The MDR-V6 music headphones were introduced in the early 1980s, and continue to roll off the manufacturing line today.  The Sony MDR-V6 music headphones were superseded in the early 1990s by the Sony MDR-7506 music headphones.  The MDR-7506 music headphones are almost identical to the MDR-V6 music headphones with the exception of the gold plated 3.5mm connector, and the ear cups display different colored accents.  The MDR-7506 music headphones are marketed differently than the MDR-V6 music headphones, in that the 7506 music headphones are distributed through Sony’s professional division, and the V6 through their consumer division.  What does this all mean?  The MDR-7506 music headphones carry a slightly increased price, however it is said that they carry a better warranty, which includes improved support, parts, and services.  The length of manufacturing of these two music headphones is a testament to their popularity, which can be reduced down to the fact that they provide great audio fidelity at a very good price.

These music headphones are members of Sony’s Studio Monitoring series of music headphones.  Both of these music headphones are very liked among professional studio engineers.  These music headphones are a fully closed ear design, also known as circumaural music headphones.  In addition to providing great audio quality at an affordable price, they are also very liked because of the following:  fold up to become very small for travelling, and are very durable.

I’m a fan of both these headphone models because they provide great sound at a reasonable price, travel very well, and are very durable.  I’ve never had to send either of these music headphones in for warranty, and actually prefer the MDR-V6 because of its full metal 3.5mm audio plug housing, whereas the 7506 has a plastic housing (just personal preference).  The V6 is also more easily found at stores if it needs to be replaced in a pinch, and is also priced at a slightly reduced price point.  Perhaps if I had needed to redeem the warranty I would be telling a different story, luckily for me that has not happened yet.

I find the audio quality of these music headphones to be very good.

The bass is very tight, and punchy, which I appreciate listening to a lot of bass heavy music, but the bass is not overly exaggerated. However, it should be noted these music headphones sound great with most types of music (R&B, rap, electronica, house music).  The music headphones do struggle a little with rock (especially live abums), symphony & orchestra tracks.  One of the only drawbacks that comes to mind is the rather small sound-staging of these music headphones, which affects these previously mentioned genres of music.  The mid-range instruments can tend to sound a bit cluttered, but not unbearably so.  Overall very good sound quality with a variety of music.

These music headphones are great for travelling for several reasons.  First they fold up to become very small, which saves space, and they come with a travelling bag for storage, which keeps them from getting messed up.  They are very durable, and travelling can at times be very hard on music headphones.  These music headphones are easily driven without an amp, which means they sound great directly plugged into your ipod, iphone, ipad, MP3 player, or other lower powered devices (one less thing to pack).  Another area where these music headphones excel is in blocking out surrounding noise, which is important for travelling music headphones.  The 10 foot cord is spiraled like a phone cord which makes it perfect for managing the cord length while on the go.  Last, being a closed headphone with a good seal around your ear, these music headphones leak very little noise; which means you won’t be bothering those around you, all while you can raise the volume.

If you’re looking for a nice pair of music headphones for around $ 100 these would be at the top of list, especially if you are going to be using them outside the house, or for travelling.
